Enzo Fernandez: The new star of Chelsea

Chelsea have made a sensational signing in the January transfer window, breaking the British transfer record to bring in Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £106.8m. The 22-year-old Argentine midfielder has been hailed as one of the best players in the world, having won the World Cup with his country in Qatar and impressed with his performances in Portugal.

But who is Enzo Fernandez and what can he bring to Chelsea? Here are some facts and stats about the new Blues star.

• Enzo Fernandez was born on 17 January 2001 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started his career at River Plate, where he made his debut at the age of 16. He won two league titles and one Copa Libertadores with River before moving to Benfica in 2022 for £40m.
• Enzo Fernandez is a versatile and creative midfielder who can play in various roles. He can operate as a deep-lying playmaker, a box-to-box midfielder or an attacking midfielder. He has excellent vision, passing, dribbling and shooting skills, as well as a high work rate and tactical awareness.
• Enzo Fernandez had a remarkable debut season with Benfica, scoring 15 goals and providing 12 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. He helped Benfica win the league title and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they lost to Chelsea.
• Enzo Fernandez was also a key member of the Argentina squad that won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. He played in all seven matches, scoring three goals and assisting four. He scored the winning goal in the final against Brazil, earning him the Golden Ball award as the best player of the tournament.
• Enzo Fernandez has signed a contract with Chelsea until 2031, becoming the most expensive signing in the club’s history and the Premier League’s history. He will wear the number 10 shirt, previously worn by legends such as Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard. He will join a talented midfield that includes N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz.

Potter's First Chelsea Game! Why Chelsea draw against Salzburg !

Better in terms of performance however not a pleasing result. Our attack remains our greatest weakness and today, we saw that once again. Although we were dominant in possession, we were wasteful of chances and couldn’t make a breakthrough. On a brighter note, given the current circumstances of the changes we are going through as a club, we looked a lot sharper, moved the ball a lot quicker and had some creative ideas. Our football looked a lot more promising and refreshing in contrast to our recent performances so we can only be patient and allow time for our new players and new manager to find a system which delivers. I would like to praise some individual performances- Mount had a poor start to the season, but today he took on the role of the playmaker we know him to be, helping both defensively and offensively and finally bagged an assist. Strong game for Reece James, with an important goal contribution. As Chelsea fans we have high expectations for him and he did not disappoint today. The power of his crosses and composure on the ball were exceptional, it was a shame that no one was in the box to receive. Brilliant defence from Thiago Silva, his clearances and long balls were spot on, and although he did not succeed in that one tackle which led to a goal, he’s not to blame as the ball should never have been lost in our midfield and his performance as a whole was phenomenal. Unlike Pulisic, Broja’s appearance in the late second half was a breath of fresh air, his pace and composure in the counter attack was superb, and something we want to see more of, so perhaps a partnership between Broja and Sterling could be interesting as they’re both quick, can take on players 1 on 1 and can make us dangerous offensively, and that is something we haven’t been for a long while. Overall, it wasn’t the result we wished for, but there are a lot of positives to take away, it’s an early stage in the competition and we have a lot to look forward to. With the 5 year deal given to Graham Potter, we now have the time and freedom to address our issues and to regain confidence, because at Chelsea, we’re used to things changing and being difficult, but we’ve proven to still come through with successes, and I believe this season won’t be any different. Better is the word to summarise today’s game. UTC!
